Clicking noise when turning: what it usually means

It almost always shows on one direction of lock and not the other, and that on its own narrows things down a long way.

This is background, not a diagnosis. Symptoms overlap, and the same noise can come from more than one thing. Use it to understand what your vehicle is doing and to describe it accurately. A shop confirms the cause with the vehicle in front of them.

The most likely cause

On a front-wheel-drive vehicle, power reaches each front wheel through a driveshaft with a constant velocity joint at the outer end. The joint has to deliver drive while the wheel is steering and moving up and down over bumps, which is a demanding job for a part that spends its life packed in grease behind a rubber boot.

The joint itself rarely wears out while it stays sealed. What usually happens is the boot splits. Grease flings out, road grit and water get in, and the bearing surfaces inside start wearing against contamination instead of running in clean grease. Once that has been going on for a while, the joint develops play, and play is what you hear.

The sound is a distinct rhythmic clicking or knocking that keeps time with wheel rotation, so it gets faster as you speed up. The giveaway is that it appears under two conditions at once: the wheel turned toward full lock, and the engine actually driving the wheels.

How to tell which side

This one is unusually easy to narrow down without any tools, and doing so saves real diagnostic time.

Find somewhere empty and safe, a large parking lot works well, and drive slow tight circles with the wheel near full lock. Do it one direction, then the other. In most cases the clicking is clearly worse turning one way.

The rule of thumb is that the joint on the outside of the turn is the loaded one, so a noise that is worse turning left usually points at the right-hand joint, and vice versa. It is a rule of thumb rather than a law, and a technician will confirm it, but arriving with "much worse on left lock" is genuinely useful information.

What the pattern tells you

When the noise appears, and what it does when you change something, separates this from its neighbors.

  • Clicking only on lock, faster as you speed up, worse one direction. Outer CV joint. The common case by a wide margin.
  • A vibration or shudder under hard acceleration in a straight line, no clicking. More likely an inner joint, which fails differently from the outer one.
  • A hum or drone that changes as you turn but has no distinct click to it. Points at a wheel bearing instead.
  • A clunk when you set off or change between forward and reverse, once per direction change. Driveline slack rather than a CV joint.
  • A rubbing or scraping that follows wheel speed and appears at any steering angle. Worth checking whether something is simply touching the tire, like a liner that has come loose.

Why the boot matters more than the noise

The useful thing to understand here is the order of events. The boot splits first and stays quiet, sometimes for months. The joint then wears, and only at the end of that process does it start clicking.

That gap is why a split boot spotted early is a very different job from a joint that has been announcing itself for a season. In the first case the sealed joint may still be in good order and the work is about restoring the seal. By the time it is clicking loudly, the wear has usually already happened.

It is also why a torn boot is worth taking seriously when someone points one out during unrelated work, even though the vehicle drives perfectly at that moment. Nothing is wrong yet. That is precisely the point.

Whether you can keep driving

A CV joint that has started clicking is not usually an emergency, and treating it as one is not warranted. Vehicles are driven around like this for a long time.

What it is, though, is a part with a known ending. Joints that click get worse rather than better, and a joint that fails completely can stop transmitting drive to that wheel. That tends to happen under load, which means turning out of a intersection is a realistic moment for it.

The practical read is that this belongs on the list for the next few weeks rather than tonight, unless the noise has changed character recently. Clicking that has become a heavy knock, or any new vibration through the floor, moves it up the list.

What a shop will actually do

The vehicle goes on a lift and the boots get inspected first, because a split one with grease sprayed around the inside of the wheel arch answers most of the question immediately.

From there a technician will grip the shaft and check for play in the joint by hand, and often turn the wheel through its range while watching and listening. Some will road test it with the same slow-circle routine described above, which is why your own observation is worth passing on.

They will also rule out the neighbors. Wheel bearings, worn steering or suspension joints, and something as simple as a loose heat shield can all produce noises people reasonably describe as clicking, and none of them are fixed by touching a driveshaft.

What to tell your service advisor

Working out which joint it is takes an inspection. Making that inspection quick is entirely down to how well the symptom gets described, and this is a symptom that describes well.

  • Which way you have to turn for it to be at its worst, and whether it does it at all in the other direction.
  • Whether it needs the steering near full lock , or shows up on a gentle bend too.
  • Whether the rhythm follows road speed and speeds up as you go faster.
  • Whether it only happens while accelerating , or continues when you lift off mid-turn.
  • When it started and whether it has become louder or heavier since.
