Why your car pulls to one side
The useful question is when it pulls: all the time, only when braking, or only over certain surfaces.
This is background, not a diagnosis. Symptoms overlap, and the same noise can come from more than one thing. Use it to understand what your vehicle is doing and to describe it accurately. A shop confirms the cause with the vehicle in front of them.
Check the tyre pressures first
This is genuinely the first thing to do, it takes five minutes, and it settles a meaningful share of pulling complaints without anyone touching the car.
A tyre noticeably softer than the one on the other side of the same axle will drag the car towards it. Pressure differences big enough to do this are often not obvious to look at, particularly on modern low-profile tyres.
Set all four to the pressures on the sticker in the driver door opening, not the number on the tyre sidewall, which is a maximum rather than a recommendation. Then drive it and see whether anything changed.
Pulls all the time
A steady pull on level road at constant speed points at the front of the list below.
- Uneven tyre pressures. The quickest thing to rule out, so start there.
- Wheel alignment. The usual suspect, and often a genuine one after hitting a kerb or a bad pothole.
- A worn or damaged tyre. Tyres can develop an internal fault that makes them pull in one direction regardless of alignment. Swapping the two front tyres side to side is a standard test: if the pull swaps direction, the tyre is the cause.
- Worn suspension or steering components. Usually with other symptoms, like vague steering or knocking over bumps.
- Uneven tyre wear across an axle , often caused by an alignment problem that has been there a while.
Only pulls when you brake
A car that tracks straight normally but veers when you press the pedal is pointing squarely at the brakes rather than the steering or suspension.
The usual cause is one side braking harder than the other, most often because a caliper is sticking and not releasing fully, or a brake hose has degraded internally and is restricting flow to one wheel.
A sticking caliper usually leaves other evidence. That wheel runs much hotter than the others after a drive, the pads on that side wear faster, and there may be a burning smell. If one wheel is noticeably hot to be near after an ordinary drive, that is worth pointing out when you book.
This one is worth not leaving. Uneven braking lengthens stopping distances and makes the car less predictable in an emergency stop.
Only on certain roads
Most roads are built with a slight camber so water drains to the edge, and nearly every car will drift gently towards the kerb as a result. That is normal and not a fault.
The test is whether it behaves the same on a road with the opposite camber, or in a different lane. A genuine fault pulls the same direction regardless. Road camber reverses when the camber does.
Similarly, ruts worn into the surface by heavy traffic can tramline the car, particularly with wider tyres. That is the road, not the car.
What about the steering wheel being off-centre?
A car that drives straight but with the steering wheel sitting at an angle is a related but separate complaint, and it usually is alignment.
It is worth mentioning specifically when you book, because a straight-driving car with a crooked wheel and a pulling car with a straight wheel can need different adjustments.
What a shop will check
Tyre pressures and condition, including looking for uneven wear patterns that tell their own story. A road test to reproduce what you described. Brake temperatures and caliper operation if the pull is under braking. Suspension and steering components for play.
Alignment is measured against manufacturer specification, and a printout showing before and after is normal to ask for. If a shop recommends alignment without measuring first, that is worth questioning.
Worth doing sooner rather than later
Even when the pull itself is mild, most of the things behind it wear tyres unevenly. An alignment problem can ruin an otherwise good tyre in a few thousand miles, which is a worse outcome than the pull itself.
What to tell your service advisor
A pull is one of the easier complaints to describe precisely, and precision here saves a lot of road-testing.
- Which way it pulls , and whether that is constant or only under braking.
- When it started , and whether it followed hitting a kerb or a pothole.
- Whether the steering wheel sits straight when the car is going straight.
- What your tyre pressures were when you last checked, and when that was.
- Any recent work on tyres, brakes or suspension, including anywhere else.
