Check engine light: flashing vs steady

The single most useful thing you can notice about this light is whether it is holding steady or flashing.

Before you drive itIf the light is flashing, reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get off the road as soon as it is safe. A flashing light usually means unburnt fuel is reaching the catalytic converter, which can destroy it in a short distance.

This is background, not a diagnosis. Symptoms overlap, and the same noise can come from more than one thing. Use it to understand what your vehicle is doing and to describe it accurately. A shop confirms the cause with the vehicle in front of them.

Steady means a fault is stored

A check engine light that comes on and stays on means the engine management system has detected something outside its expected range and recorded a code for it.

That covers an enormous range. It might be an emissions sensor drifting out of tolerance, a small leak in the fuel vapour system, or an early sign of something that will get worse. The light itself does not distinguish between trivial and serious, which is why it causes so much anxiety.

In general, a steady light with the car driving normally is a this-week problem rather than a right-now one. Get it scanned, find out what the code is, and decide from there.

Flashing means stop

A flashing or blinking check engine light is a different signal, and most manufacturers use it for one thing: a misfire severe enough to be damaging.

When a cylinder misfires, the fuel that should have burned in the engine goes out through the exhaust instead. The catalytic converter is designed to run hot, and raw fuel arriving in it makes it run far hotter than it should. That can destroy the converter, and it is a part very much worth protecting.

The damage happens over a fairly short distance. This is the case where pulling over and arranging a tow is the right call rather than pressing on to somewhere convenient.

Check the gas cap first

It sounds like a joke and it is a real cause. A loose, cracked or missing fuel cap lets vapour escape, the system detects the leak, and the light comes on.

If the light appeared shortly after a fill-up, take the cap off and put it back on properly until it clicks. The light will not go out immediately. The system needs to run its check again, which can take a few drive cycles, so give it a couple of days.

If it goes out on its own, that was it. If it does not, you have lost nothing and ruled out the simplest cause.

What else tends to be behind it

Common causes, roughly in order of how often they turn up.

  • Oxygen sensor. Ages out, reads inaccurately, hurts fuel economy before it causes anything worse.
  • Fuel vapour system leak. The cap, or a hose or valve in that system.
  • Ignition coil or spark plugs. Often the cause when there is a misfire, and usually the reason a light flashes.
  • Mass airflow sensor. Frequently just dirty rather than failed.
  • Catalytic converter efficiency. Sometimes the converter itself, often a symptom of something upstream that has been ignored.

What the code does and does not tell you

A scan gives a code, and a code names a circuit or a symptom. It does not name the broken part, and this is where a lot of money gets wasted.

A code pointing at an oxygen sensor can mean the sensor has failed, or that the sensor is correctly reporting something else, like an exhaust leak or a fuelling problem. Replacing the sensor because the code mentioned it is a common guess and often the wrong one.

Worth knowing before anything gets acted on from a code read at a parts counter. A scan is the start of a diagnosis, not the end of one, and confirming it is exactly the work a shop does.

What to tell your service advisor

Anything you noticed alongside the light narrows the search, and diagnostic time is the slowest part of this job. These are the details that help most.

  • When it came on. After a fill-up, after driving through deep water, after a cold start, after a repair somewhere else.
  • Whether the car feels different. Rough idle, hesitation, loss of power, worse fuel economy.
  • Whether it comes and goes , and if so what you were doing when it appeared.
  • Any noises or smells that started around the same time.

Do not just clear it

Basic scan tools can clear the code and turn the light off. That does not repair anything. The fault is still there and the light will come back, usually within a few days.

It also erases the stored data a technician would have used, including the conditions recorded when the fault occurred. Clearing a code before a diagnosis makes that diagnosis slower and sometimes impossible until the fault happens again.

The one useful reason to clear a code is to see whether it returns after a repair, and that is a decision for whoever did the repair.
